Throughout my gardening journey, I often found myself wasting valuable time trying to fix my garden in every way but the most essential – planting the right flowers.
Experimenting with different plant shapes, fertilization tactics, pruning in unique ways, and adding other aesthetic elements to the garden actually had little visual impact.
That appealing and eye-catching look a garden must have just wasn’t there. Something was missing and I figured out what it was a lot later.
In this article, I’ll walk you through a list of must-have flowers for a picture perfect Autumn landscape so that your garden doesn’t lag behind like mine did for many years:
15 – Nemesia
Nemesias are small, incredibly vibrant flowers that offer a wide variety of colors including pink, purple, yellow, cream, orange, and often a combination of two colors in one flower.
They’re perfect for outdoor planting and hanging baskets as their colorful blooms work very well to uplift any landscape.
14 – Cosmos
Cosmos blooms have a unique daisy-like shape and graceful look that makes them extremely charming and irresistible in the garden.
13 – Fuchsia
Fuchsia plants feature incredibly attractive, two-toned blooms that come in different shades of pink and purple. The flowers have a tubular shape to them but they hang upside down which makes them resemble small bells.
12 – Goldenrods
Goldenrods feature clusters of tiny, yellow flowers that bring a stunningly bright and attractive look to the landscape they’re planted in.
Their deep green foliage really complements their blooms but keep in mind that goldenrods can spread like weeds because of their tendency to multiply.
11 – Sunflowers
Well, fortunately or unfortunately, sunflowers have made it to this list as well. We all know the kind of blooms they offer; I mean they’re definitely up there in the top two most recognizable flowers – after roses of course.
10 – Asters
For beautifying an autumn landscape, asters are ideal as they radiate a charming variety of different colors like blue, purple, crimson, and white that can really grab attention and lure the eyes in.
9 – Violas
Violas can add a wholesome touch to landscapes and provide a feeling of warmth. They offer adorable blooms that often have deeper, richer hues at the center that fade to lighter shades along the petals.
8 – Dahlias
Dahlias offer large, intricate blooms in a variety of different colors such as pink, cream, crimson, white, and blue that can have a striking effect on landscapes.
Their perfectly symmetrical, layered petals look incredibly attractive despite being a little tough to maintain and care for.
7- Petunias
Petunia blooms are soft and vibrant; they can add further beauty to nourishing landscapes and gardens. You’ll find petunia flowers often in bold shades of red, purple, blue, pink, and lighter colors like white. They also produce a sweet fragrance that draws pollinators like bees and butterflies.
6 – Zinnias
Zinnias are hardy plants that come in pretty much every color you can possibly imagine. Their blooms are relatively large and beautiful with overlapping petals that make them a popular choice amongst pollinators.
5 – Hydrangeas
Wow, I just realized: I’ve mentioned hydrangeas in pretty much all my fall planting articles! I mean…they do deserve the attention to be honest.
Hydrangeas offer attractive foliage and large spherical flowers that can melt even the coldest of hearts. Surprisingly, hydrangea blooms change color based on the pH of the soil.
If pH is low, you’re more likely to see blue flowers, and, with a slightly higher soil pH (more alkalinity), pink-ish flowers can emerge.
4 – Black-Eyed Susans
Black-eyed Susan blooms can resemble sunflowers if seen from a distance. They have a darker center, yellow petals, and attractive foliage, except the blooms can be a bit smaller in size compared to sunflowers which are rather large. Fun fact, they’re actually known for their resilience and can thrive in different conditions and soil types.
3 – Helenium
Helenium blooms are exceptionally unique and vibrant. They have a warm, orang-ish tone to them with a darker center that really helps them add striking beauty to landscapes and gardens.
2 – Sedums
Sedum blooms feature thick clusters of tiny red, yellow, pink, and cream colored flowers in either soft or deep tones. They’re quite drought-tolerant and resilient, meaning they will call for little maintenance and attention once they establish roots.
1 – Roses
Newer hybrids of roses are generally more resilient and cold-hardy, meaning they will be ideal for autumn planting. If you wish to make the landscape more vibrant and blissful, skip the typical red roses and go with a green, blue, purple, pink, or white variety.
Final Words
For a picture-perfect autumn landscape, it’s important that you get autumn planting right. Ditch the basic and straightforward flowers and go for ones that feature striking, vibrant blooms; you’re looking to beautify the landscape, not settle for an “okay” view.
