As a young girl, I once noticed my mother growing one of her plants in a vase filled with water. I was confused but fascinated at the same time.

As I grew older and started taking more interest in gardening myself, I learned more about growing plants in water. To my surprise, some of my plants actually grew faster in water than in soil!

Today, we’ll be going over 9 houseplants that will benefit from faster growth if planted in water rather than soil. Let’s dive right into it!

Pothos
Pothos

I’ve mentioned pothos frequently in my houseplant articles; it’s easily one of my favorites. The thing you’ll find unique about pothos is despite its complex structure and foliage, it’s actually super easy to grow. It’s better to grow this one in water rather than soil and it thrives with pretty much minimal care.

Lucky Bamboo

Chinese legends suggest lucky bamboo can bring good luck and prosperity to your home. I don’t know how much truth that claim holds, but I do know that this flowering plant grows super well in water. Due to its clean, minimalist appearance, it can also add that zen look to indoor spaces.

Spider Plant

As much as I love spider plants in indoor environments, I actually don’t have any in my home because I’ve run low on space after placing pothos and cactuses all around.

The thing about spider plants is that they not only add a clean and simple look to indoor spaces but also produce baby plants rapidly if propagated in water, meaning you have more plants to strategically place around the house.

Philodendron

As strange and scary as this houseplant sounds, it’s just your average houseplant that you’ve probably seen everywhere. Philodendron is a popular choice amongst people who live in small flats and studio apartments as they don’t take up much space and add this calming energy to the place.

This plant absolutely loves water and grows long, lush vines effortlessly.

Monstera

Okay, now this is what I’m talking about.

Monstera is simply my most favorite houseplant ever. And, it’s not because of any particular reason except the unique Swiss cheese like foliage. Young monstera cuttings root and grow quickly in water before they’re transplanted

One thing you want to keep in mind, however, is that monsteras are infamous for root rot and leaf discoloration issues. Water them with care and avoid overdoing anything as it may lead to unwanted trouble.

Chinese Evergreen

The Chinese evergreen houseplant can be grown both in water and in soil. The plant adapts well to water and can often grow faster in it as compared to soil. This one has that sort of common “houseplant look” and is both clean and elegant in its own way.

Peace Lily

Peace lily is another common houseplant that I’ve frequently gone over in my articles. True to the name, this plant adds that vibe of peace and tranquility to indoor spaces and it can even bloom in the right conditions!

Coleus

Like the simple name, coleus is a very simple houseplant that produces incredibly vibrant foliage often in a diverse array of colors ranging from green, purple, and pink all the way to orange and yellow. It grows well in water and is capable of adding bold color to dull indoor spaces.

Wandering Jew

This is another vibrant houseplant that can bring lots of color and brightness to lifeless indoor spaces. You’ll find wandering Jew foliage in a mix of purple, green, and crimson red. It grows super fast but prefers to be grown in water rather than conventional soil.
